Pelican Elementary Grateful for E-readers

Florida Pioneers recently donated e-readers to Pelican Island Elementary School in Sebastian. The school was very grateful and sent the following letter of thanks:

Dear AT&T Florida Pioneers,

On behalf of Pelican Island Elementary I would like to thank you for the very generous contribution to our school and our students of 5 E-Readers, gift cards and the Teacher of the Year basket. We plan to utilize the E-Readers in the Media Center to give students an opportunity to utilize technology to acquire literature with a more varied selection of popular titles. For some of our students, this will be the first time that they will have been exposed to E-Readers so we can’t wait to be able to provide that opportunity for them through your gift. We welcome you back at any time to see them in use in our Media Center so you can see with your own eyes the enjoyment of literacy and technology that you have brought to our students. We sincerely thank you for choosing Pelican Island Elementary for the essay contest and for your continued partnership not only with this opportunity but also for your continuous and generous donations to our food pantry.

Sincerely,
Chris Kohlstedt -Principal Pelican Island Elementary

River City Delivers Books

jax photo 5 jax photo 2

The River City Pioneers went to Woodland Acres Elementary and gave each child and teacher in the entire school one or two brand new, beautiful books to use in the classroom and bring home to keep.
Woodland Acres is a Title 1 school and many of the children are from low income families. Sadly, some of these children have never owned a book before.
The River City Pioneers receive these new books from First Book free of charge however we have to pay between $.35-$.65 shipping for each book. Rather than giving used books, which can be found at discounted prices, the council chose to give the new books, “because we are able to give an entire class (and grade for that matter) the same new books. This allows the teachers and reading coaches to use these books when teaching the children,” says Jan Wise. Some of the books retail for over $20 on Amazon so paying for shipping only is a great deal
